There are two main outside influences when it comes to home improvement, your lending company who finances the renovations and the contractor you choose to make the improvements to your home.

When it comes to the contractor, you should be just as careful as you where when you selected the correct financing institution.

But how exactly should one go about finding a reputable and reliable contractor? This is always a difficult decision but maybe these few pointers will help you in the right direction.

Always plan ahead and have a definite goal.

Prior to even looking for a contractor it should be very clear to you exactly what you are looking to achieve through the renovations and what the end product that you desire should look like.

If possible, you should put down your desired result on paper in the form of a sketch or if you know how, a more detailed plan.

In this way you will be able to communicate exactly what you want to the tentative contractor in a far shorter period of time. It simply makes it easier for him to envisage what you have in mind and understand your requirements.

Have preset questions.

Even though we all know somebody who is willing to make recommendations as to whom you should get to do the job for you, it is advisable to always evaluate the contractor and his abilities yourself.

If they simply say that they are unable to help you in this regard, consider another contractor as any contractor who knows his trade will be able to present you with a variety of options and explain their pros and cons.

·         Always give an indication of the time frame you have in mind and watch the contractor’s reaction.

·         Any contractor who tells you that the project will take exactly any specified amount of time is not experienced, as any one who has experience in renovation knows that you cannot put any job to a predefined time.

·         This is due to many things involved in renovating which are not under our control, such as the weather to name but one. If he can give you a good estimate as to the duration time of the project and back it up with hard facts, chances are you may have found a good contractor.

Take the time to interview properly.

The time taken on your part to actually sit down in a relaxed environment and discuss your needs with the potential contractor is well worth it. Be sure to accurately describe to them what you envision and ask them for their input or suggestions.

Hear what they have to offer and any advice they might have and if you find that you both are aiming in the same direction you may just have the right contractor for the job.
